Peter Mandaville This talk explored some of the ways in which Muslim identity and Islamic knowledge are articulated via media and other discursive formations that resonate with the unique features and challenges of Muslim communities in Europe and North America. Through an overview of various forms of popular cultural production, including music, short videos, and new forms of consuming religion, this presentation explores the nature of contemporary Islamic religious authority and its role in the construction of a Western Islamic vernacular.

Nelly Sarkissian This autobiographical video documents the pilgrimage to the Holy City Jerusalem. By the end of the journey, the artist marks her body with a BADGE OF PRIDE called "HAJJI TATTOO," an iconographic image tattooed on her right arm as her Armenian cultural religious heritage. And in contrast, this body project experience transcends from its traditional “religiousness” to become a pure form of self-narration, self-construction, and a live archive of her breathing identity. Dr. Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian The protracted historical experience of occupation, annexation and displacement of Jerusalem’s Palestinian inhabitants has shaped relationships between place, space, identity politics, nationality and gender constructions in the city. The presentation shed light on the ways in which individuals and their families perceive their trapped bodies and lives as laying both “inside” and “outside” the contexts of violence, displacement and eviction. Dr. Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian is a Professor at the Faculty of Law- Institute of Criminology and School of Social Work and Public Welfare, Hebrew University- Israel. Her main theoretical and research interest has focused on the study of women in conflict zones, mainly in Palestine. Dr. Shalhoub-Kevorkian just completed a book manuscript entitled: Militarization and Violence Against Women in Conflict Zones in the Middle East: The Palestinian case-study that was published by Cambridge University Press 2009.
